Technology Literacy

The goal of our computer literacy program is to provide a quality program that is in full compliance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in technology literacy. In a manner that is developmentally appropriate, students will learn to use computer applications to manipulate and communicate information.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade students continue to build upon computer skills developed in kindergarten through third grade extending their applications to include e-mail, word processing and graphics.

Through a designated scope and sequence and in conjunction with content area curriculum, students incrementally develop skills and competence beginning in kindergarten and progressing to grade 8 in computer literacy.

Over the K-8 exposure students will:
-demonstrate skill in using a computer and Local Area Network (LAN)
- use a word processor as a writing and publishing tool.
- participate in curriculum based projects that use a spreadsheet to analyze manipulate, and predict data.
- participate in curriculum based projects that use a database to access, manipulate, and utilize information including information found on the World Wide Web.
- participate in curriculum based projects that use a multimediapresentation program to manipulate and present information to large audiences.
- participate in curriculum based projects that use telecommunications including distance learning, the Internet, and the World Wide Web, to interact with other students and connect with outside resources to research retrieve, and share ideas and information.

Specific goals for students in grades 5 and 6 are:
- continue to use eduational software that coincides tieh the curriculum, including special areas such as art and music.
- use word processing
- continue to use the Draw and Paint.
- introduction to database and spreadsheet.

Computer Awareness: Usage
The learner will be able to describe common uses for the computer. (NJCCCS 8.1).

Computer Awareness: Applications
The learner will be able to review and describe the ways computer affect people's lives and identify computer related occupations. (NJCCCS 8.1).

The learner will be able to utilize elements of desktop publishing in creation of projects. (NJCCCS 8.1).

Computer Skills: Help Feature
The learner will be able to use the help feature in a word processing program. (NJCCCS 8.1).

Computer Skills: Keyboarding
The learner will be able to review keyboarding and practice performing disk utilities such as delete, copy, and move files on one computer or over a LAN. (NJCCCS 8.1).

Computer Skills: Files
The learner will be able to demonstrate retrieving a word processing file from a local computer , or a network computer. (NJCCCS 8.1).

Computer Skills: Printing
The learner will be able to use a printer to print a word processing file on a local computer of a network computer. (NJCCCS 8.1).
