Library Procedures
Students visit the Media
Center on a rotating schedule.
Kindergarten is on a five day schedule, while First and Second Grades
rotate every six days. Their time is
split each month between the computer room and the library. Books are due each week on their library
day. Students may bring their books to
the library to be renewed if they need more time. Overdue notices are issued on the 15th of each
month. Students with books missing for
more than a month receive a letter in the mail asking them to return the book
or pay for a replacement.
In the
library, students listen to stories; participate in discussions about the book
selections and work on other reading skills.
They learn the parts of a book, the job of the author and illustrator,
the difference between fiction and non-fiction and how the books are organized
in the library. Books for Kindergarten students are pre-selected for their
ability and interest level, other students learn to locate books on the
shelves.
Students do a
follow-up page that reviews the story or skill for the day. Then they circulate around the library to
different learning areas. They have
their choice to go to the listening center to hear another book, relax with
their book or a magazine in the beanbag chairs of the Book Nook, explore
educational backpacks filled with books and manipulatives.
In the
Technology Room, students learn basic computer terminology, and use a variety
of software programs that enrich all areas of the curriculum.
