Welcome to the Multilingual Learners Program
At Chester School District, we celebrate the rich cultural and linguistic diversity that our students bring to our schools. Our Multilingual Learners (MLL) program is designed to support students as they develop English language proficiency while continuing to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Through inclusive instruction, individualized support, and a commitment to equity, we empower our multilingual learners to thrive in both their home language and English. We believe that language is a strength, and we are proud to partner with families to ensure every child’s success.

Our ESL Teachers are all trained in Be GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) to help specifically target and promote language skills, academic achievement, and cross-cultural skills. Information on Be GLAD can be found here.

Exiting from our Program
Students receiving multilingual learner (ML) services are considered for exit from the program when they demonstrate the English language proficiency necessary to successfully access grade-level instruction without additional language support. A student is considered for exit from Multilingual Learner (ML) services when they meet the state-established English language proficiency criteria and demonstrate the ability to successfully access grade-level instruction without additional language support.

Once a student exits ML services, their progress continues to be monitored for two years to ensure they are continuing to succeed academically and linguistically. During this monitoring period, school staff review the student’s classroom performance, academic progress, and English language development and may provide additional support if concerns arise. This process helps ensure that students transition successfully from ML services while continuing to receive appropriate attention and support as they progress in their education.
