SPECIAL SERVICES/ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - WELCOME LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the Department of Student Services. Our department provides services to the special education child and the English as a Second Language child in all three schools in the Chester School district. We also oversee special education services for students attending any nonpublic school in Chester.
In each of the schools, we have special education teachers and district personnel such as an occupational therapist, speech and language specialists, paraprofessionals , a physical therapist, and a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst). In addition, each school is assigned a Child Study Team member of a school psychologist, a Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant, and a school social worker. We also have ESL teachers in all three schools. If you would like information about the various procedures and kinds of meetings you will attend in Special Education, you are welcome to give me a call at 908-879-6004 or email me at Jeanette.Krone@chester-nj.org. My office is located at Dickerson School and you are always welcome to visit. On this website, there is a Child Find flyer that describes what a parent should look for when they suspect learning disabilities. There is also a Camp Achieve flyer that describes the extended school year program run by the district for classified students in need of this service. This program is held at Dickerson School for all students preschool through grade 8 per the recommendation of the Child Study Team. The dates of Camp Achieve for summer 2021 are July th through August 6th. Preschoolers attend from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m and kindergarteners to eighth-graders attend from 8:30 to 1:00. There is no school on Fridays.
As a parent of a classified child, CANDO is a parent support group that provides parents with information and support. CANDO stands for Children’s Abilities, Not Disabilities Organization. We also have an ESL Parent's group for our parents of English as a Second Language. Please do not hesitate to join us at our meetings. Meetings are held in the morning or evenings with childcare provided. Invitations advertising our CANDO meeting or ESL meeting are mailed to each parent approximately 3 to 5 times a year prior to our meetings, so please stay tuned. In closing, I wish you the very best with your child’s success. Remember, your child is very important to us. Keep in mind that every child can learn and reach their potential if we intervene and support them as they move through their educational journey. Our job is not to disable a child more, but to enable a child to succeed. To that end, if your child can do a task, let them do the task on their own. You will be fostering your child’s independence and success in school and with practice, your help, and, our help and support, working together, they will most surely succeed.
